Most people cruise past Los Arcos, snap the photo, and move on. Cute rocks, thanks for coming.
But here is what you are actually looking at:
Los Arcos is one of the most dramatic little corners of Bahía de Banderas – shallow, clear snorkel water on top, a serious underwater drop just beyond, protected marine life, and a deep-water corridor that connects into the same routes whales use as they move through the bay.
It is nature showing off, 20 minutes from central Puerto Vallarta.
Where you are
Los Arcos National Marine Park sits between Mismaloya and Las Gemelas.Five granite islets. Natural arches. Caves. Steep walls.Protected since the 1980s, which means no fishing, no reef “souvenirs,” and a whole lot more life than your average crowded beach spot.
What is happening under the water
Snorkel zone (about 3–10 m / 10–30 ft)Clear days mean:
Rocky ledges and arches
Bright reef fish, pufferfish, angelfish, sergeant majors
Eels tucked in the rocks
Occasional turtle cruise-through
Easy, fun, and close to the surface.
Dive / deep zone (down toward ±40 m / 130 ft and beyond)Push a little farther out and it shifts:
Steeper walls and boulders
Sandy channels
Famous sites like El Acuario, El Bajo, El Cañón, “Devil’s Jaw”
And just past that, the bottom drops into much deeper water tied into the main basin of the bay. That steep transition from “tourist snorkel” to “serious blue” happens surprisingly close to shore. That is the secret.
What this has to do with whales
Each season (roughly December to March), humpback whales use Bahía de Banderas as a warm, protected breeding and calving area.
Los Arcos is not a trained-whale show. But the underwater layout around here helps:
Deep channels near the south shore
A sharp drop-off that connects offshore deep water with the inner bay
Better sound travel for whale songs in those deeper sections
Natural “highways” that let them move in and out comfortably
So when you look out toward Los Arcos and say, “Right off those rocks, it falls into the deep blue routes whales use when they come into Vallarta,” that is real, not brochure fluff.
Why this matters if you are thinking about living here
This is what I love sharing with future locals:
You are not just choosing a condo or a house. You are choosing a bay with:
Protected marine parks like Los Arcos
Real wildlife, real depth, real geography that shapes how this place feels day to day
Easy access to experiences that are five minutes from your morning coffee, not a once-a-year vacation tour
Los Arcos is one example of how quickly Puerto Vallarta shifts from city, to jungle, to deep Pacific. If that mix excites you, you are my people.
If you are tired of generic listing spam and want someone who can actually connect lifestyle, location, and numbers: I am here for that.
I will help you:
Understand which part of the bay fits how you live
Compare neighborhoods like Mismaloya, Conchas Chinas, Amapas, Romantic Zone, Marina, etc.
Find a home or investment that makes waking up here feel as good as your vacations did
Send me a message and let us start with the fun part: learning the bay.The keys come after.
