Why August in Puerto Vallarta is Totally Worth It (Even if the Forecast Says Rain Every Day)
Every year, I hear it — someone looks up the August forecast for Puerto Vallarta, sees a little rain cloud on every single day, and cancels their trip.
Here’s the truth: those forecasts are incredibly misleading.
The Real Rain Numbers
Average monthly rainfall: About 9.9 inches (≈ 252 mm) in August.
Average days with measurable rain: Around 14 days a month — and most of those are short-lived showers, not all-day downpours.
Timing: In typical tropical style, rain often falls in the late afternoon or evening after a hot, sunny day. Mornings are usually dry and beautiful.
Geography matters: The Sierra Madre mountains can pull most of the rain away from the city, so sometimes it’s pouring in the hills but still sunny on the beach.
Why August is One of My Favorite Months
1. Lush, Green, and Gorgeous
The rainy season transforms Puerto Vallarta into a tropical paradise. The mountains glow green, the gardens explode with blooms, and waterfalls run full and fast.
2. Warm Ocean Water
August brings some of the warmest water temperatures of the year. You can float in the Pacific without a chill — it’s like nature’s infinity pool.
3. Fewer Crowds
While winter travelers wait for “dry season,” you’ll have more space at the beach, in restaurants, and on tours. The Romantic Zone feels more like a charming local neighborhood.
4. Lower Prices
Flights, hotels, and vacation rentals often cost less in August, meaning you can upgrade your stay or stretch your trip longer for the same budget.
5. Dramatic Skies
Evening storms create some of the most breathtaking sunsets you’ll ever see — pink, gold, and purple layered over the bay, sometimes with lightning in the distance.
How to Plan Your Days in August
Mornings: Schedule your beach time, boating, and outdoor adventures.
Afternoons: Be ready for a short rain shower — use it as an excuse for a leisurely lunch or spa visit.
Evenings: Enjoy the cooler air and post-rain glow as you stroll the Malecón.
Bottom line: Don’t let the little rain cloud icons scare you. In August, Puerto Vallarta still delivers plenty of sunshine, warm water, vibrant scenery, and a more relaxed, affordable experience. The rain is part of the charm — and it rarely ruins your day.
